At Wickersley Partnership Trust, it is our number one priority to prepare our students for life and there is nothing more important than making sure that students have the knowledge and skills they need in order to play their full role in society and contribute to improving it. That is why we ensure that each subject our students study includes information on what career path the subject can lead to and how it can contribute to others.
The start of the 23/24 academic year saw English as the first subject who had their ‘Careers in the Curriculum’ week. Across our secondary schools, students from all year groups focused on how English may help them when it comes to life beyond education. Our Y7 students looked at how English helps in the world of work, including the importance of having good written and verbal communication skills; Y8 students were introduced to how English can work within the realm of marketing, including drafting and redrafting; Y9s learnt how English can link into a career within the legal landscape; Y10s delved into journalism and how a passion for English can launch a career within the media industry; Y11s explored how English can link into a range of careers and Y12s looked at post-18 options for English, including further education, apprenticeships and internships.
Drama linked in closely with the English careers lessons, because like English, communication is incredibly important within the realm of Drama. Our Y8 students completed several tasks based around the theme of public speaking and how important this will be beyond education. Y9s looked at careers in Theatre, including Playwright, Director, Set Designer, Stage Manager and Actor Musician, showing our students that Drama doesn’t always mean you have to become an actor to pursue a career in the Arts. Y10 students were introduced to careers within film and television, including Producer, Director and Sound Mixer. WPT aims to exhibit as many paths to our students as possible, and show them that there are more opportunities out there than they may realise. Leading on from this, our Y11 students, who may be thinking more about what career path they would like to follow, were shown just how many jobs can link to their love of Drama and what they may need to follow those journeys. Y12s were shown some of the post-18 routes for Drama, including studying at university or a Drama School.
History was the next subject to dive into the world of work. Y7 students looked at the skills learnt in History lessons, including communication (linking back to English), problem solving, critical thinking, strong arguments and different viewpoints; all of these skills will marry up with a range of career choices. Y8 students delved into careers that are directly linked to History, including Archaeologist, Genealogist and Archivist. WPT believes in opening up our students to as many options as possible. Our Y9 students, again, looked at how History can link into a career within the legal system; Y10 students looked at Civil Service careers, including apprenticeships and how to work within the Civil Service. Y11 students were introduced to research careers that link to History, and, finally, our Y12s looked at post-18 routes linked to History including which courses could be of interest in further education or apprenticeships.
Throughout the year, we will be looking at more career paths and how they link to what our students study during their time at secondary school.
