This week in Science Club, the students took part in three challenges:
🧪 Homemade Lava Lamp – students made these using oil, water, alka seltzer tablets, and food colouring. They followed a simple instruction sheet, and all made one or two different Lava Lamps, the students loved watching them work.
🧪 Pirate Ship Challenge – students were given the choice of some plastic containers that they were able to fasten onto a pirate ship template. Once completed, they were to test their skills, and see how much treasure (100g weights) they could put into the ship that was floating before it sank. Hazel and Abie came out the winners here, well done!
🧪 Carbon Sugar Snake – students put together a tray of sand, which in the centre contained sugar and baking soda. They then soaked the sand with ethanol, and at a safe distance they used a metre ruler and splint, lighting the ethanol that had soaked into the sand, and in the process sent fire burning through the sugar/baking powder mix to produce a snake like feature.
Well done to everyone who came along this week, and we will hopefully see you next time for some more fun experiments!
If any students see something they would potentially like to try in Science Club, let Mr Atkins know in school or through Science Club Google Classroom, and it can be looked into. Christmas prizes and competition information will follow soon, including a Science Club raffle.
