Year 7 Science Careers Lesson – Smashing Stereotypes

When you think of a scientist, what do they look like?

If this is what you think of, this is called a ‘stereotype’. Its an image often created by TV, media and books

Dr. Sheila Kanani was born in London, U.K.

She studied astrophysics at the University of Manchester and University College London. Dr. Kanani also used the Cassini spacecraft to study Saturn!

Dr Kanani is a planetary physicist, science TV presenter, Physics teacher, space comedian and author of books for children and young adults.

She is one busy STEM superstar!

Space Psychologist

Responsible for ensuring astronauts are well supported to deal with spending time in space

Snake Milker

Responsible for taking venom from a snake. Snake venom has many uses, but it’s a dangerous job so a great deal of training is needed.

Scatologist

The study of excrement. Excrement can help inform a scientist of an animals health.

Firework Designer

Responsible for designing fireworks to ensure they are safe and visually impressive. A firework designer must have a good understanding of explosives.

Year 9 Science Careers Lesson – Jobs & Qualifications in Science

Throughout your life you may gain different qualifications

Here is a list starting with the lowest level. Some job roles will require you to have specific qualifications in order to do them

  • GCSE grade 1-3 – school
  • GCSE grade 4-9 – school
  • A-level – college or sixth form
  • T-level – college or sixth form
  • BTEC level 3 (vocational course) – college or sixth form
  • Undergraduate degree – University
  • Masters Degree – University
  • Postgraduate Degree – University
  • Doctorate – University

Doctor

Entry Requirements: University Degree,  A’levels in science
GCSEs – minimum 7 at least grade 7 and higher in sciences

Midwife

Entry Requirements: Diploma or degree in nursing, Minimum 5 GCSEs 4+ and 2 or 3 A levels

Laboratory Technician

Entry Requirements: 5 GCSEs grade 4+ including 2 sciences

No! of course it’s important if you want to be a doctor or vet etc. but learning about Science in school helps develop a huge range of skills and knowledge that will be crucial to you in your working life and beyond.
